Thank you, hello everyone, and welcome back to CC Airwaves. I'm your host, paige Matillo. Today I'll be sharing the legacy of Cleveland's very own John J Jack Call Jr. He wasn't just a business visionary, but a man whose faith deeply informed his approach to leadership and life. Born and raised on the west side of Cleveland, jack attended St Edward High School in Lakewood and later John Carroll University in University Heights. These institutions laid a foundation that cultivated his interest in community and service.
Speaker 1:In his senior year at John Carroll, jack met Melvin Anderson, who offered him a position at Manko Incorporated, a small company known for its practical products, including the now famous duct tape brand Duct Tape. After working at Manko for eight years, jack made a bold move he bought the business. It was the late 1960s, a time of great social and economic change. Yet Jack remained unafraid. He saw potential where others saw a challenge. Over the next three decades, jack's leadership transformed Manko from a modest enterprise into a national corporation.
Speaker 1:However, what set Jack apart was not just his strategic thinking, but how he conducted business. His philosophy was simple but profound lead with the heart. Jack's book Leading from the Heart, choosing to be a Servant Leader, encapsulates his approach, illustrating his belief in servant leadership and a caring company culture. Under his guidance, minko was not just a workplace, but a community one that reflected his deep Catholic values. Jack's influence and ethos led to accolades, including being named one of America's most admired CEOs by Industry Week magazine in 1993 and recognized by Inc magazine as one of three CEOs in America to benchmark leadership practices. What was most remarkable about Jack was how he attributed much of his leadership style to his Catholic faith. He believed that a good leader serves their community and uplifts those around them, a principle he lived out daily. Despite his success, jack never lost touch with the values that shaped him. He remained deeply connected to those roots, often speaking at his alma maters about the importance of integrating faith with career aspirations.
Speaker 1:Jack passed away at the age of 78 in 2018,. Jack passed away at the age of 78 in 2018, leaving behind a legacy of innovation, kindness and principled leadership. He is buried at St Joseph's Cemetery in Avon, ohio, a resting place that marks the end of his earthly journey, but the enduring impact of his life continues to inspire others. Jack Call's story is a powerful reminder of how faith and work can harmoniously coexist. He demonstrated that it's possible to be both a successful entrepreneur and a devout Catholic, using each day to lead by example. His life encourages us all to think about how our careers, ethics and beliefs are intertwined and how we might use our own positions, whatever they might be, to affect positive change in the world around us. Jack's life was a testament to living one's faith in the workplace and beyond, proving that the most enduring success is that which helps others rise alongside you.
Speaker 1:Thank you for tuning in to CC Airwaves. I'm Paige Mattillo and it's been a pleasure to share this extraordinary story with you.
